Start A Packaging Satellite

Thank you for your interest in setting up a Kids Against Hunger food packaging satellite and for your commitment to ending child malnutrition and starvation. Establishing a Kids Against Hunger satellite is a significant commitment because each new satellite becomes part of a national packaging network whose collective work feeds millions of children and their families. We ask that you give serious thought to the responsibility you are taking on as a Satellite Director because we want the work to be a source of satisfaction to you and a reliable source of food for the children we feed.

Kids Against Hunger performs its mission through a network of food packaging "satellite" operations that extends across the U.S. and Canada. As of mid-October 2009, this network includes 67 locations in 22 U.S. states and Canada (as well as two "Division" locations managed by Headquarters). Satellites are nonprofit organizations affiliated with Kids Against Hunger that package the proprietary Kids Against Hunger formulated food for the malnourished and starving children of the world. A satellite must have a facility in which it can set up its manual packaging equipment and store supplies and the packaged food. The actual food packaging is done by volunteers; consequently the satellite needs the ability to attract, schedule, and supervise volunteer food packagers. In order for a satellite to successful long-term, a strong team of leaders is needed, and the satellite must have the ability to raise funds to cover program costs on an ongoing basis.

This is a decentralized and highly entrepreneurial organization. The majority of satellite locations operate under their own 501(c)(3) status. Each satellite signs a licensing agreement with the Kids Against Hunger Headquarters office in New Hope (MN). We require some reporting, but also governs product content and quality, as well as adherence to best practices. This model has allowed our program to reach into smaller communities and to develop new and innovative ways to engage people in more communities. We have also been able to establish relationships with organizations such as Kiwanis and Rotary, and many churches of widely varying denominations and faiths. In 2008 alone, and through the efforts of an estimated 115,000 volunteers, over 40 million meals have been delivered to those in need around the world.
